Coco York - Voice of an Angel - Coco York The Australian Sidney Sun "CoCo York kept her public on the edge of their seats for two hours with a "journey through Black American music". She was only allowed to leave after her third encore." The Volkstimme, Germany From Strong, Arkansas, USA, where she was born to New Orleans, Australia, Asia, Africa, to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the name CoCo York is synonymous with music and style: The Bourbon Street magazine wrote, “when she sings the blues, you feel it.” The Australian Sidney Sun commented, “CoCo combines the sensuousness of a Terpsechore. Put that with a stunning vocal range and you have a performance that makes any tired old heart beat faster.” CoCo has shared the stage with artists such as McCoy Tyner, Dianne Reeves, Tanya Marie, Tuck & Patti, Toots Thielemans, Dee Dee Bridgewater and many others. She has performed for Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and received a US Grant from the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) to tour the USA and Africa. She has appeared in theaters, recorded and has extensive television and radio experience. During President Clinton’s visit to the Netherlands she sang for the President and his wife, with all the Dutch members of Government present. When President Clinton was inaugurated for the second time, CoCo was invited to sing at the inauguration party. Born Guinevere Henry and nicknamed CoCo because of her penchant for drinking hot chocolate, she received a music degree from Southern University in Louisiana. She studied Opera with Mattiwilda Dobbs then subsequently returned to Southern University to work towards a masters degree in music. Her first professional appearances were in the clubs of the French Quarter of New Orleans where her intuitive response to the blues and jazz were nurtured and molded. From there, she traveled to Africa to learn the rhythm of her roots and the songs of her people. The African sojourn brought a new dimension to a singer already schooled in the classics, opera and the blues of Bourbon Street. In 1998 the album Cloudburst of the Gerard Vogel Quartet was released for which CoCo wrote most of the songs and did the lead vocals. In 2000 CoCo toured with the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra through out the Netherlands and Belgium with “The Soul Show” and in 2003, she was a co-star in “La Vie en Rose” with the same orchestra. It is fitting to say that CoCo York is a consummate artist, at home in music…all music, all styles. |
